Sunday morning saw scouts eagerly emerging from their tents at about 7am. It was a bright sunny morning and we were in a buoyant mood. Breakfast was bacon and eggs which was cooked by each patrol in their own mess tent. Bread and cereal was also available for those who did not want a cooked breakfast. Scouts did their own washing up and cleaning of their mess tent area.

Next followed the setting up of Camp Bank accounts. Scouts gave in their pocket money for safe keeping. Opening a bank account enabled scouts to purchase tuck at the tuck shop. Any money remaining in bank accounts at the end of the week was returned to the scouts before their visit into town. Tuck shop usually operated once a day although some scouts were restricted in the amount of tuck they could purchase if they had either chosen not to eat any proper food for tea or been caught engaged in any activity deemed to be ‘dodgy’.

In the afternoon half the scouts went to Windemere to collect 9 kayaks and 2 open canoes from the Cumbrian Scout Group. This involved lugging the canoes about 600 yeards up and then down a not insignificant hill. The remainder of the group stayed at camp and built two rafts with help and guidance from Rob, Jim and Michael.

When the canoe collection group returned everyone was hot and sweaty so a spontaneous canoe and raft testing session was organised.

Thankfully our camp site was only a couple of hundred meters from the edge of lake Windemere so off we trotted down the path, canoes, rafts and paddles in tow. This was a fun session on the water and scouts were left to do whatever they wanted within reason. Steve, Vicky, Dave and Michael hopped into their own canoes to provide general guidance and help those who managed to fall out of or capsize their canoes. Dave’s dog Bengy also entered into the spirit of things, apparently he is already an expert canoeist.

Tired, wet and hungry we returned to camp for the tea cooking ritual. Tea tonight was chicken curry. Each patrol was given a pack of rice, six chicken breasts and two jars of curry sauce. They were given basic instructions on the order in which to cook the food and their patrol mentors checked that their chicken was cooked (fried) before they were allowed to add the sauce. Pudding was mandarin oranges and tinned rice pudding.

By the time we had eaten and cleared away in was gone 8pm. Tuck shop was brought out and given the late time of day it was decided to limit scouts to a maximum of 25p of tuck purchases. Everyone was tucked up in their tents by about 10pm, giving the leaders a much needed couple of hours of quiet time before going to bed themselves.
