Well, tiredness was definitely setting in and scouts had to be roused out of their sleeping bags at around 8:30am. It was also tipping down with rain again so for many scouts who had managed to get their waterproofs soaking on Monday, bin bags were the designer fashion of the day.

The patrol leaders were given instructions on how to cook the bread patties for breakfast before going off to their patrols to squash and bash their dough into submission before placing in the frying pan. This is the first time we have cooked these on camp and they tasted great with butter and jam. We’ll be having them again next year.

Our original plan for this day had been to go horse riding, but due to lack of enthusiasm from several leaders, a couple of horse allergies and the ludicrous price quoted by the local riding stables, we opted for mountain biking instead. We split into two groups once again and the bikers went off to Hawkshead for a two hour low level ride along forest tracks. The remaining scouts had lessons in how to use saws, axes and pen knives. The weather cleared up in the afternoon and this significantly improved moral amongst everyone, we were confident that we had seen the last of the poor weather and a local farmer was quoted as saying things would improve.

The opening of the camp tuck shop was always welcomed with enthusasm

Sorry we have no cycling photos as our resident photographer had to drive 30 minutes to Kendal to stock up on supplies in the morning and then to the laundry in the afternoon.

We had tuna in cheese sauce with pasta for tea. As many of our scouts have never done any serious cooking at home they were beginning to get a little stressed about some of the cooking. We were determined that they should cook as many of their own meals as possible but the thought of explaining how to make white sauce caused us to think again. In the end we opted for a compromise, we made the sauce and gave it to them so that all they had to do was add tuna and grated cheese. They did have to cook their own pasta. Pudding was cake (kindly provided by parents) and custard. Technically scouts were only allowed one helping of cake because we wanted to keep it for the packed lunches but having left the food unattended who could blame them for making sure they weren’t going to bed hungry.
