Bycicle Maintenance - September 2008
As part of our Cyclist badge we learn how to look after our bikes

The Scouts learnt about basic bycicle maintenance at two sessions run by Graham.

On the left two Scouts are pleased to have extracted their inner tube from their tyre.

The following session allowed them to repair punctures on some already 'trashed' inner tubes.

Getting the wheel off was the first challenge and now it takes two people to use the tyre levers to get the tyre off the rim of the wheel.

I'm not sure if this Scout is putting the wheel back on or taking it off but either way it was part of the maintenance process. He looks like he knows what he is doing!

Water transfer activity. This required a serious amount of teamwork and
most Scouts got a little wet.

One person and a tyre is tricky business but this enthusiastic Scout is not deterred.

As part of bike maintenance we also covered:

  • Adjusting seat height
  • Adjusting handle bar height
  • Making sure breaks worked and adjusting them if they didn't
  • Making sure gears worked and adusting them
  • Checking tyres were inflated
  • Replacing a chain (including shortening)

We also did:

  • Manoeverability excercises

But sorry we don't have any photos!
